This case study is a typical example of how I produce bespoke contemporary artwork for a client.

Kandin'Sea

Initially I spoke with the client who expressed a love of Kandinsky’s work and had a requirement for a large painting to go in her dining room. We arranged to meet at her home in order that I could photograph the setting and discuss the painting in more detail.

In preparation for my visit I sourced many Kandinsky examples from which my client was able to establish a favourite to base the painiting on. I took many photographs of the area and soft furnishings with which the painting would need to compliment. I also colour matched the walls and soft furnishing using paints, as photographs are never absolutely accurate. We also established the exact size of the painting. The client requested that the painting be quite textural and that she would like me to use some silver in the work.

Before

Armed with all this information I then produced four colour-ways to give the client an even more exact idea of how the final piece would look. She e-mailed her selection and I was able to commence the work.

Colourways

I then drew the design onto the canvas and began texturising with Gesso. For the sand texture I used a stippling method with a stiff brush and for the flowing smoother areas I used a palette knife. I allowed the gesso to dry overnight and built the texture up over several days.

Texture

I then began to paint using the main areas of colour as laid out in the colour-way. I also used the textural areas to guide the movement of the paint.

When the piece was complete I e-mailed the client photographs for approval. I then arranged to deliver the piece at her home.

Finished

It was wonderful to see the finished work in its correct setting as it truly enhanced the look of the room.
